The Sea of Ice

The Sea of Ice is located at Mont Blanc and is the largest French glacier, 7 Kilometres in length and a width that ranges between 700 and 1950 meters. This is truly an impressive sight and one that you will not want to miss!

The charming little train leaves from Chamonix and takes you up to an altitude of 1913 m to offer you a unique panoramic view of the Mer de Glace, the Grandes Jorasses and the Drus. On site, several activities await you. For example, you can visit the ice cave for an original immersion in the heart of the glacier: Recreated every year, it is accessible in 20 minutes on foot or by cable car followed by several hundred steps to climb. Also worth visiting on the Montenvers site, the Glaciorium's interactive space which allows you to better understand the formation, typology and functioning of the Ice Sea Glacier. The Temple of Nature is a museum housing period scenes, which evokes the passage in this former refuge of personalities such as Louis Pasteur or Chateaubriand. Hiking enthusiasts can also take advantage of the beautiful loops from Montenvers, or descend to Chamonix by two possible routes. Finally, catering points invite you to share a meal with a view of the Mer de Glace: traditional Savoyard, on the thumb or lunch type, depending on your needs and budget.
